What Are Pillow Shams? How You Can Use Them To Your Advantage

Pillow shams are a cover that goes over the pillows you already have. A pillow sham's purpose is to give a new look to the pillow, and by giving a new look to the pillow you can easily give the room they are in a new flair of decoration.

If you like to keep your home new and do a lot of redecorating then pillow shams are something that will make your life a lot easier and your redecorating a lot cheaper, as pillow shams are easy to change and are most often not expensive to buy. 

Pillow shams are good for a few different reasons, the first one being that if you are changing your décor, buying a few new pillow shams is way easier and cheaper then buying a whole new set of pillows. The next great thing about using pillow shams is that if something gets spilled on your pillow you can simply remove the sham and throw it through the wash. (based on washing directions of sham) 

Pillow shams can also be good for you even if you do not change your décor often. As well as already have been mentioned they can be washed easily but also take this into account. If you like your décor the way it is, then what about when those pillows that match it so well get flat, or out of shape, it now makes the room look bad. If you are using pillow shams then you can simply replace the pillow inside of the sham with a new one and now you have your room back to looking it's best.

Pillow shams come in many different designs, fabrics and styles, out of all the styles they are available in, there is surely something that will work with the décor of your home. 

Pillow shams most often come in smooth fabrics such as cotton, or silk. Less expensive pillow shams  may come in poleyester or other cheaper fabrics. However pillow shams can be made out of practically any type of fabric including Cotton, silk, suede, satin, velvet, taffeta, denim and microfibe  so you can look for the kingd of fabric that suits you best.

Pillow Shams come in all kinds of different designs, so many that I can even begin to name them. If you spend a little tme lookingyou will surely find a design or color that suits the decoration of your room. Pillow shams can also have designs that use beads, or other decorations on them.  If you cannot you can always have custom pillow shams made specifically for your decor, while this will most likely be more expensive it may be worth it. If you do not want to pay someone else to do it, there is the opion of making your own pillow sham. Dependig on your experience with sewing this may or may not be easier for you.

You can find pillow shams for almost any kind of pillow, king size pillow shams, queen pillow shams, throw pillow shams, bedding pillow shams, and more. While they come in a viariety of sizes  the most comon size is for the throw pillow. Throw pillows can tie together a room despite their small size, they really can make a huge difference.  Throw pillows are used on sofas, love seats, beds, benches, chairs and other type furniture.  

Pillow shams are usally go wit the colors of the room in some way, if used in the bedroom the pillow sham will in most cases match the bedding, however if you wish to be a little more creative you could choose a color that contradics with the bedding.  Or perhaps the pillow sham can go with another item(s) in the room. Many people don't like to use the exact main color of the bedding ro of the room because then the pillows blend into everything else leaving you will a base, blah color for everything.

Pillow shams used in the living room, or other main room in the house would most likely go with a color in that room but not a mian color in that room. If it doesn't match a color in that room it would msot likely be the opisite of a color in that room, such as having blue walls, or sofa you could use orange pillow shams. 

If you have a lot of different patterns in the room try and choose a pillow sham that goes with an existing color alreaady there and make them a solid color. Plain. Or there will be to much going on in the room making it look confusing and no longer a comfortable place to be in. However if you have a plain room then using a color that doesn't match is a great idea, you can also use patterned pillow shams, and in a plain room a busy patterned sham can tie the entire room together. 

It all depends on your room, your decor and your taste, try different patterns, colors and styles and find which works best for you.
